MS-DOS Abandonware

How to Play Old MS-DOS Abandonware Games

With modern operation systems(OS) based on Windows, Linux or MAC OS, you mostly cannot play old games designed for MS-DOS or old Windows distributions like Windows 3.1 or 95. This article shows your the possibilities of how to play those games.

If you have an old game and an OS that cannot play it properly, you have following options:

Emulator

This option is mostly reasonable for DOS games even when there are some Windows emulators for Linux or MAC. Emulator is a program, that can run a different  program in an environment typical for this program. For example MS-DOS emulator for Windows can run MS-DOS programs in Windows environment.

The best DOS emulator you can find is definitely DOSBOX. About 70% games run in default configuration and you can customize settings for almost every old DOS game. There are several PC emulators like BOCHS but they mostly have poor performance and you will probably not be able to play more complex games. PC emulator is a program emulating a complete PC, with a DOS image, you can boot up a whole new virtual computer. Those emulators are quite ineffective in compare with virtualization mentioned later. You can google some more stuff if interested, just look for "DOS emulator" or "PC emulator" for your system.

Something a little else is VDMSound Project. It emulates old sound card and other hardware to allow playing old DOS games directly under Windows. Unfortunately, this emulator is currently not working with Windows Vista and 7. But if you have NT/2000/XP system it's definitely worth a try,

DOSBOX

I will focus on DOSBOX DOS emulator because it is a top of all possible emulators. DOSBOX is available for a wide range of OS including Windows, Linux, MAC and even Solaris is supported. There are also a lot of different frontends available to download at dosbox page. Complete documentation is available here. We will focus here only at some specific options.

When you install DOSBOX, you can play your old games pretty easy. In Windows, you can drag&drop game executable file at the desktop icon and the game will start instantly, detailed description is located here, with workaround for other OS. DOSBOX has some shortcuts to enter/leave fullscreen, change graphics, etc. those shortcuts are available here. Take your time to browse the documentation a bit, it cannot hurt you. Those basic information will be enough to play a wide area of games. Some games however require some special settings to work. every DOSBOX installation contains a configuration file. Name and location can differ based on OS but when you find some game not working with default settings, you will have to change it. Please note, that you will need a specific configuration file for every game that don't work with default settings. You can use program parameter -userconf to load a specific configuration file. Please keep in mind that there can be multiple .EXE files located in your game directory. Refer to the game manual about the meaning of every file if not sure. When you start a DOSBOX without a parameter, you will get a DOS shell. All commands you can use are listed here. You can also use some utilities, take a closer look at MOUNT (for mounting disk devices including CD-ROM), CONFIG (For managing configuration files) and KEYB or IMGMOUNT can be pretty usefull.

Virtualization

In computing, virtualization is the facility that allows multiple operating systems to simultaneously share processor resources in a safe and efficient manner, a facility generically known as hardware virtualization. In the late 1990s x86 virtualization was achieved by complex software techniques which overcame the processor's lack of virtualization support and attained reasonable performance. In the mid 2000s, both Intel and AMD added hardware support to their processors making virtualization software simpler, and later hardware changes provided substantial speed improvements. Source: wikipedia.org

Virtualization is a good option to run both Windows or DOS games. You just have to setup a virtual machine and install an old Windows distribution or a simple DOS. Ideally install Windows 95/98 if you have some and you will get a DOS boot capability for free. If you wish to install a DOS only I recommend FreeDOS. It's free and has a lot of modern useful tools included. You can get a nice full distribution packed to an ISO image. This method is unfortunately much more complex and requires some basic skills with OS installation and with DOS OS. Anyway there is a project called RetroUSB that can be very helpful since you can boot an image directly to you virtual machine without a further configuration.

There are several virtualization tools that you can get. Windows users will probably choose a VirtualPC because it can do the job fine and is available for free. There are several other tools like Xen or Qemu but they require advanced computer skills to get them to work. See more information at their web pages. The most suitable solution for all OS is definitely VMware. It is basically not for free, but they offer a VMware player for free that is sufficient for our purpose.

Compatibility mode

This option is for old Windows games that cannot be run normally. This can be done under Windows only. Modern Windows OS have a mode called "Compatibility mode". In this mode, you can simulate an environment of older Windows systems like Win95. Some old Windows games for Win95/98 or even earlier will work in this mode. You may be even lucky with some newer DOS games.

Compatibility Image

You can set a compatibility mode for an old executable you wish to run that was designed for Windows 95 or even older. Some DOS games can run too but don't count on it too much. To initiate this dialog simply select preferences of the executable you wish to run. Selecting all checkboxes is usually a best choice but you can experiment with it.

Back in the days of grey television sets (almost), Digger was one of the games that set the gaming industry on the go. At the time, the graphics were superb, the effects made with the pc speaker were state-of-the-art and the gameplay? Addictive. The bottom line is that you must dig your way around the screens, dropping bags of gold so you can pick up the gold and killing of your enemies who chase you around. The best is the bonus time when you are able to get the cherry and run after your enemies with the cowboy music playing. OK, games are a lot better these days, but if you're looking for light relief, then a bit of nostalgic recollection will put some more sprite in your day.

Based on the 1990 movie Die Hard 2, the program sends you through five stages modelled after key scenes of the film. As N.Y. cop John McClane, you have to shoot terrorists invading Washington’s Dulles airport by quickly aiming a crosshair at them. You’ll successively clear the luggage center, airport annexe and runway, then chase after the bad guys on a snowmobile and finally shoot it out on the wing of the terrorist’s plane.

You probably feel like a crash test dummy when you're playing this game - it's not only a racing game, but you get points for wrecking your enemies! The amount of points you get depends on how you hit them ... e.g. you get more points for getting them do a 360 other than driving into theirs sides at high speed. The game has more to offer: a head to head mode with only two cars or the legendary destruction derby itself - a huge arena, every car starts at the edge of it, and then - have a nice crash!

Imagine cruising around in a spacecraft in a world with zero gravity ... it comes as no surprise that you're not sure where your feet are after a few hours of play. The action and graphics are smooth and you maneuvre through tunnels and caverns, blasting away enemies using the special weapons you pick up. Easy to learn and tough to master, especially in the multiplayer mode with equally able human enemies. It's a great 360 degree gaming experience, worth a try.

The sequel to the original descent game features new levels, new weapons and new robot enemies. It also comes with helpful ideas for the player like the Guide-bot, the ability to fly with afterburner or energy-to-shield converter that many times they become a must!

This is a straightforward, top-view racer/shooter from some of the former members of Future Crew, one of the most revered demogroups ever.

Win races by either blasting the opposition to smithereens or outrun them in the old fashioned way, all the while progressing through 6 different cars with tire, engine and armour upgrades. You can also cheat your way out of races by purchasing spiked bumpers, mines and rocket fuel in the black market, or sabotaging opposing vehicles.

The game has a very fast engine (smooth on a decent Pentium 100) which utilizes some 3D, high quality and fast-paced music, and atmosphere.

Purple Tentacle, one of the crazy Dr. Fred's creations, drinks contaminated water from Dr. Fred's Sludge-o-matic. He mutates into an insane genius and grows arms, and now he's plotting to take over the world. In an effort to stop him, Dr. Fred sends three friends, Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne back in time to yesterday, in order for them to turn off the Sludge-o-matic and stop the sludge from spilling into the river, thus preventing the whole incident. Naturally, the cheap doctor uses a fake diamond over a real one in his time machine, which blows up sending Hoagie 200 years into the past and Laverne 200 years into the future.

Now you must bring back Hoagie and Laverne, with the help of the time machine's ability to move objects between time periods, and then stop evil Purple from taking over the world.

Day of the Tentacle is a point-and-click adventure game and a sequel to Maniac Mansion. The player controls Bernard, and later also Hoagie and Laverne, being able to switch between them at any time. By using the commands at the bottom of the screen, the character can pick up items, use them on other things, talk to people and more. Any of the three friends can also send his items across time to another friend.

The game takes place in the same building, but in three different eras, and thus affecting history takes a vital part in some puzzles. For instance, Hoagie can hide a bottle of wine in the XVIIIth century, and Laverne discovers the bottle in the XXIIIth century - but by then, the wine has already turned into vinegar.

A somewhat average EGA sidescroller created by Apogee right around the same time as the first Keen game was released ... this probably explains why it has been generally overlooked. In any case, it's nowhere near being a bad game, so if you're looking for a good EGA platformer, try it out. Note that it can be annoying at times, since the gameplay predates Keen.

Along the way he encounters the various platform baddies that he must either jump to death in the classic style or destroy with bombs. Bombs are also useful for finding secrets. Cosmo is also armed with suction cup arms which he can use to climb up tall walls.

This version of Commander Keen was made by another company (Softdisk Publishing) besides Apogee Software, but it still sticks mostly to the original, except for some changes. All the fun of jumping across platform stages with Billy and his pogo stick remains, and this is another chance for you to discover new levels, passageways and plenty of fun to come!

Here is the classic real-time strategy game. There exist two parties, NOD and GDI. Both have different units and structures. The game features about 15 mission on each side. In most missions you have to build a base first to build new units and structures. Special harvesters collect the so-called "Tiberium" and convert it to money in a reffinery. The game features fmv after every mission.

Colonization puts you in the role of Viceroy of the New World. You are sent by your King and country to establish colonies in the newly-discovered Americas that lie to the west. You face many of the same challenges that faced colonial organizers of the time-competition from other Old World powers, strange native cultures, the problems of establishing profitable trade programs, and the problems of organizing an army from a rag-tag band of colonists.

Concentration was a popular game show in the mid-to-late 1980s, and this game was adapted from that television program. Two players can play against each other, or one person can play against a computer generated opponent. The answer to the puzzle is hidden by tiles. The tiles have words denoting game prizes ("Mexico", "Camera", "Telescope", for example), and your object is to find the two matching worded tiles. Exposing two at a time, your memory is taxed as more prize tiles are revealed and then covered over again. As more tiles are matched, the hidden puzzle is revealed. Solve the puzzle and you win the game.

Use these Downloads at your own risk.

Because this site for all intense and purpose is aimed at the linux Wine app layer and files are provided because the WineHQ website specifically advises the use of a Crack/NOCD to allow the software to function due to the failure to provide copy protection functionality in the Wine software.

Cracks/NOCD downloads are not viruses and some Anti-Virus companies mark the files as Viruses to prevent use of NOCD/Cracks on Windows, Most of the files marked as a virus or generic.Tojen are actually a fake virus this is because the software companies provide data in those files to a Anti-Virus Company in order to prevent the NOCD/Crack from working. As mentioned use the files on this site at your own risk because some of the files may contain fake Viruses but if used on Linux/Windows they shouldn't have any actual effect on the system.

One great thing about Linux is that spyware is unable to effect the system because the one major difference between Windows and Linux is that it is written without a registry which is where most or all spyware is designed to infect which Windows relies soley on, and so there is one major reason to use Wine, Cedega as an application layor to run Windows software and games even though the registry files still exist the system doesnt depend on it so the spyware is unable to function.

Extra Repositories for Lucid Lynx

A Few Tips

Make sure that the Synaptic package manager is installed in Lucid Lynx by opening a terminal and typing

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Run Synaptic once it is installed. You will find it in (Ubuntu) System>Administration or (Kubuntu) Applications>System

Synaptic Package Manager

Synaptic Package Manager, the Front End of Apt-Get

Then bring out her voice with the Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Restricted Extras and Medibuntu repositories; and enable the repositories that come with Ubuntu but which are disabled by default. Sounds complicated, it isn’t and I’ll talk you through it (some of it.. enough of it to get you through!).

Ensure wget, vlc, ffmpeg and imagemagick are installed (they should be) by typing:

sudo apt-get install wget vlc ffmpeg imagemagick

Now you’re ready to dress our lucid lynx in some damn sexy kit.

Medibuntu

Medibuntu provides the multimedia codecs that cannot be distributed with Ubuntu due to legal restrictions. Installation is easy, just type or copy and paste the following code into a terminal to install the Medibuntu repository (see bootnotes one and two):

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

Then copy and paste this next bit into your terminal:

sudo apt-get --yes install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu

Now you’re ready to install the encrypted DVD and non-native media format codecs.

Enter this command into your terminal to enable encrypted DVD playback:

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

And choose the correct command below to enable non-native media playback for your system:

i386 computers

sudo apt-get install w32codecs

amd64 computers

sudo apt-get install w64codecs

ppc computers

sudo apt-get install ppc-codecs

If you want to install Acrobat Reader you should type “acroread” into Synaptic.

Bootnote One

The Medibuntu DNS server is not always available. This results in the errors listed below being reported when the package lists are updated:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/lucid/Release.gpg Could not connect to packages.medibuntu.org:80 (88.191.82.11). - connect (110: Connection timed out)

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/lucid/non-free/source/Sources.gz Unable to connect to packages.medibuntu.org:http:

There is a fix, thanks to Andrew and Defrysk at WebUpD8. Copy and paste this snippet into your terminal to bypass the DNS servers:

echo "88.191.101.8 packages.medibuntu.org" | sudo tee -a /etc/hosts

Bootnote Two

The Medibuntu PGP Key as provided above is currently out of date and has only been included because it is the one mentioned in the official Medibuntu Howto. The currently working one is available from both the Mit Edu Key Server and the Veridis Key Server. The easiest way to add the key from the Mit PGP Key Server is to copy and paste this snippet into a terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver pgp.mit.edu 0C5A2783
Enable the Disabled Repositories

Open Synaptic, click “Settings” in the top bar menu then click “Repositories”.

Synaptic Software Sources

Synaptic Software Sources

Ensure that all software sources listed under the first tab labeled Ubuntu Software are ticked. Disregard Installable from CD-ROM/DVD.

Tick all software sources listed under the second tab, Other Software, are also ticked. Revisit this tab whenever you add new repositories via the command line.

Install the Restricted Extras

Search Synaptic for “restricted extras”, scroll down the list of packages and find “*buntu Restricted Extras”. Choose to install all versions that match your desktop environment.

Ubuntu Studio

Ubuntu Studio provides a lot of audio and video playback, streaming, editing and creation software. There is no longer any need to add a separate repository to add Ubuntu Studio packages to a regular Ubuntu desktop system. Add Ubuntu Studio by searching Synaptic for “Ubuntu Studio” and clicking the packages you wish to install. Select “Ubuntu Studio Desktop” to install all available Ubuntu Studio components.

PlayOnLinux

This is still the best way to install and manage multiple versions of Wine. It provides access to multitudinous Windows software installation scripts which make installing Windows programs into Lucid Lynx a breeze.

The home page for PlayOnLinux is here.

Add the PlayOnLinux repository to Lucid Lynx and install it with

sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_lucid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
VirtualBox

VirtualBox allows guest operating systems to be installed within a host operating system. The guest OS is installed on a (emulated) virtual machine and runs at the same time as the host. Good for those who need to use multiple operating systems without rebooting their machines. Fantastic for Linux users who want to run Windows games that will not work in Wine (use VB to install Windows within Linux). The guest will only function once you switch it on (boot the OS with VirtalBox).

The home page is here.

64-bit and 32-bit users should use this terminal command to add the VirtualBox repository, the PPG Key and to install the package:

sudo echo deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid non-free >> /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-3.2

The actual package name (virtualbox-3.2) could change. You can browse for the package “virtual” with Synaptic to ensure you get the most up to date version. I advise against the Open Source Edition (OSE) because it lacks some essential functionality.

IPList

The privacy advocate’s essential security component. IPList is similar to the PeerGuardian program used on Windows – it prevents file downloads from IP addresses that are known to be espiant. That is to say that some people provide downloads and seed torrents for the sole purpose of spying on and tracking down downloaders. IPList drops data packets downloaded from such uploaders and seeders thus helps protect downloader’s privacy.

The homepage is here.

Add the repository by copying and pasting this code into a terminal:

sudo touch /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iplist.list
sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ssakar/ppa/ubuntu lucid main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iplist.list
sudo echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ssakar/ppa/ubuntu lucid main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iplist.list
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com C6E3D905C8BCD56BB02E6E0B39456311108B243F
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install iplist
GetDeb and PlayDeb

GetDeb and PlayDeb provide prebuilt Debian application and game packages for Ubuntu distros. Where the Ubuntu and GetDeb or PlayDeb repositories provide the same software, the packages provided by GetDeb and PlayDeb are more up to date than those provided by Ubuntu.

The homepage of GetDeb is here.

The homepage of PlayDeb is here.

At the time of writing this, both repositories and homepages are unavailable. According to their blog they will be up and running again soon. I will update with their repository details as soon as I am aware they are available.

SDLMAME & SDLMESS

The version of MAME provided by the official Lucid Lynx Ubuntu repo is out of date. A much better one is provided by WallyWeek.org.

You can add the Lucid MAME repository for major releases by copying and pasting these lines into a terminal:

wget http://sdlmame4ubuntu.org/repoc/957AC3A6.gpg -O- |
sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://sdlmame4ubuntu.org/repoc/lucid.major.list -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/sdlmame4ubuntu.major.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mame

If you want to install intermediate releases of MAME then copy and paste these lines into a terminal:

sudo wget http://sdlmame4ubuntu.org/repoc/lucid.urel.list -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/sdlmame4ubuntu.urel.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mame

Intermediate releases of SDLMAME can be less stable than their major counterparts.

Another repository for both SDLMAME and SDLMESS can be found at apt.ludomatic.fr/. It is designed for Debian but will provide for Ubuntu soon (so they say).

A good front end for SDLMESS and SDLMAME is QMC2. You can add the Lucid repo and install it with:

sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mmbossoni-gmail/emu/ubuntu lucid main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 3212DC8B
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install qmc2

Alternatively, use this one line command to add the repositories to Lucid:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mmbossoni-gmail/emu
LAMP

Not a repository but a vital piece of kit for anyone who wants to install web apps on his local computer, write and test PHP scripts or build a website that requires facilities usually only offered by web servers.

Lamp is the acronym for:

  • Linux
  • Apache
  • MySQL
  • PHP

It converts a regular desktop operating system into a web server capable system. And, thanks to the Ubuntu developers, is very easy to install into Lucid (and Karmic). Just copy and paste this line into a terminal and watch the magic be done:

sudo apt-get install lamp-server^

Next you will want to install PHPMyAdmin, the database management package:

sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

The best way to manage your LAMP server (that I know of) is with Webmin which can be downloaded and installed from here.

Check your LAMP server is properly installed by pointing your web browser to http://localhost where you should be greeted by an Apache welcome message (of a sort).

You will be able to view PHPMyAdmin at http://localhost/phpmyadmin

If you cannot access PHPMyAdmin then you will need to create a symlink to it with:

sudo ln -s /usr/share/phpmyadmin /var/www/phpmyadmin

You can enable Apache mod_rewrite with:

sudo a2enmod rewrite
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

To view your server space you need to point your file manager to /var/www

You can give yourself ownership of /var/www with

sudo chown username:username /var/www

Exchange “username” for your Lucid Lynx username.
